Writing Tip: Character Traits

The other day I was looking through some of the files I had on an old

computer. I’m glad I did because I found a file with papers, I had received way back when I had begun writing and was taking writing classes.

Among the papers I found, one was particularly interesting. The item was a copy of personality traits or characteristics. Our instructor had us use the list as we developed our main characters. The idea was to form an image of how we wanted to portray our main characters. Then, we would go through the list of personality traits and think about how each trait would, or would not fit the person we were developing.

The list given to us was old and has been copied and recopied quite a few times, which accounts for the rather worn appearance.

However, if you are working on a story and your character just doesn’t seem to fit the idea you have in your head. Use this list to help you fine-tune the character’s personality. Make the character as bad, evil, kind or as sweet as you need to fit your story. This list may help to round them out.
