Writing Tip: Common Mistakes in Beginning Writing

The basic requirement for beginning writers is rewrite. A beginning writer must get over thinking that their first draft of their first writing effort is done. It ain’t. It’s nowhere near reaching the point where it can be submitted to an editor of a publisher.

And if you chose self-publishing – Don’t.

Having stressed that you need to rewrite, rewrite and then rewrite some more, here are the Common Mistakes in Beginning Writing that should concern your rewriting.

1. All sentences must be concise and have a payoff.

2. Every word of dialogue must advance the story line and be concise. No flowery dialogue that rambles on without purpose.

3. Reader must never be confused. You can give the reader hints and clues that may get them thinking, but never think that misleading, or tricking, the reader is cleaver writing. Always give the reader enough so that when they finish the book, they can look back and see that it all fit.

4. Anti-climatic sentences. Save the most powerful punch for the end of the sentence.

5. The lead paragraph must grab the reader.

6. The story must not confuse the issue with unexplained POV changes.
